Frequently Asked Questions
In order to comply with Yoga Alliance standards and ensure that you receive the full education necessary to teach, full attendance is required. However, emergencies do occur. In the case of an emergency, you will have the opportunity to make up hours at an hourly rate with one of our Experienced-Registered Yoga Teachers at a cost of $75/hour (can be combined with other trainees needing to make up hours in order to make it more affordable) or during future teacher trainings at no additional cost (within 2 years of your training’s commencement). If the missed hours are with one of our guest teachers, such as anatomy, the private instruction option may not be available. If you have a particular attendance concern, I encourage you to talk it over with our program advisor to see if it can or cannot be accomodated. This training is intensive and clearing your schedule as much as possible is recommended.
Yes. After graduating the training, you will be prepared to teach group classes or to private clientele. Teaching is a practiced art so we recommend teaching as much as possible immediately to increase your skill level and confidence. Everyone will teach at least two community classes as part of their practicum at Sacred. There are limited teaching positions available at Sacred. Teacher training does not guarantee that you will teach at this studio in particular. However, it is our intention to support, grow, and employ our graduates whenever and wherever possible.
We recommend at least eight months of regular practice. We see teaching as an extension of being a student. There are times when building a sturdier foundation is useful and other times when this is only a fear-based barrier to jumping in. We are here to help you suss out whether you are ready and if you are not, how to best prepare for upcoming trainings. If you are not sure, definitely, talk with one of our program advisors. Don’t worry, you don’t need to have the bendiest body or know the Sanskrit names for everu asanas to begin teacher training or even to be a gifted yoga teacher.
Applicants will find out if they are accepted within 2 weeks of submission of their completed application.
Yes! Membership is always included for the duration of your training plus one week prior and two weeks following.
While we don’t directly provide housing, Sacred is a thriving and generous local community. We have many students with the capacity to rent extra rooms and sofa space. If housing is a need for you, please talk to a program advisor about your specific requirements and we may be able to facilitate a great connection.
We will have a strong emphasis on teaching as we believe that skilled teachers need not only a strong practice and knowledge of yoga but real true life teaching skills. If you are unsure to what extent or in what capacity you want to teach, definitely this training will work for you. However, if you are deadset against teaching yoga ever and only want to deepen your practice, than this (or any) teacher training might not be the best fit and a yoga intensive may better suit your needs. Unsure? Talk to a program advisor.
At the 200 hour level, you will not have a specific mentor assigned to you. However there will be small group study offered about twice a week with our teaching staff to support you in your practice teaching. You will be well-supported.
You will be challenged for sure but it is not our intention to push the body in a way that is damaging or harmful. Included in your schedule will be about 3 practice sessions per weekend (heated and non-heated), as well as posture clinics. In between weekends, you will be required to practice minimally twice. If you want more intensity, there will be able to take additional practices and if you need to, you can always sit out poses and observe.
The Yoga Alliance is a nationally recognized organization that registers yoga teachers and schools that meet set standards. Upon successful completion of the Sacred Vinyasa Yoga Flow 200 hour Teacher Training, we recommend you register with The Yoga Alliance as a RYT (Registered Yoga Teacher). Our application to be a RYS (Registered Yoga School) is currently pending and we do not anticipate any obstacles in having it approved. For more information about the Yoga Alliance, please go to www.yogalliance.org
We will offer one TTA position for this training. The TTA tuition is $1200 and can be paid with a Flexible Payment Plan. TTAs can expect to work approximately 8 hours/week during the course of the training, two weeks leading up to the training, and two weeks following. To apply, fill out the Yoga Teacher Training Assistant Application.
Outside costs are minimal. You will be required to purchase five required books, most of which are available in used or digital formats online. The expected cost ranges between $50 and $150. You will also be required to take three outside classes at selected studios, which range between $10 and $25 each. Beyond these classes, you may choose to rent studio space for additional practice classes for $25/hour, makeup missed class sessions for $75/hour, or buy additional recommended readings. These costs are all optional. Teacher trainees are responsible for their own food and lodgings. In total, plan an additional $200 for materials to be safe.
Our teacher training is an extension of our Studio. We don’t have a dogma that we preach from nor do we stand for a generic transmission. We believe in accessibility, profundity, intuition, light-heartedness, and accepting the beauty of our imperfections. We think gregarious laughter is as Sacred as a hushed Om. We offer a solid platform to learn the skills necessary to lead a yoga class in a very unique package. In essence, we are fusionists, consciously blending our unique voices with the sage wisdom of our yoga predecessors and contemporary leaders in movements for higher consciousness. We think that punk rock and hip-hop have a place next to Krishna Das on yoga playlists. While many yoga programs seek to perpetuate the teachings of a specific guru from a yoga lineage, we call upon our collective wisdom to reveal the teacher within. In other ways, we are quite similar to other training programs, as essentially we share a common goal of healing through yoga.
No problem. This teacher training will not prepare you to teach advanced asana. It will teach a challenging class that is do-able by most of the general public with variations and modifications to increase and decrease the level of challenge. Advanced asana practice is not necessary. In other words, please don’t wait until you can stand on your head with one arm to teach (unless you want to teach a single-handed headstand).
Once you complete your final practicum successfully, including passing the written and oral final open book exam and successfully teach two full practice classes, you will receive your certification within three weeks time. You will be emailed once it is prepared and will have the option to receive it in person or by mail.
We discuss the nature of establishing yourself as a yoga teacher during course of the training. While it is certainly “a hustle”, we know from experience that if you are dedicated and work on your craft, you can find opportunity.
Yes. You can expect approximately 5 hours of homework per week (more or less based upon your learning style, available time, and appetite for the material), 2 required on-site yoga practices during the week, 2 class observations during the course of the training, and 3 practices over the course of the entire training off-site from a list of master teachers. Additionally there will be optional study sessions available during the week. Requirements outside of the weekend modules can be scheduled at a time that is convenient for you. Teacher training is intensive, particularily when done in conjuction with other responsibilities. We encourage you to make your time as free as possible in order to not feel overwhelmed.
